Updated 05/06/16 - 7:12 a.m.

(CBS) – The Chicago Fire Department assisted Harvey firefighters Thursday night in fighting a three-alarm blaze that wiped out a strip mall in downtown Harvey.

Everyone inside the building at 154th and Broadway got out safely by the time fire crews responded to the blaze around 4:45 p.m., officials said. The fire flared up later, and parts of the building were collapsing by 7:30 p.m.

The building housed City Sports, a jewelry store, a pawn shop, a beauty supply store, and apartments on the second floor.

All told, eight neighboring fire departments rendered assistance.

Fire officials said the building was a total loss. Although the fire was extinguished Thursday evening, the ruins of the building were still smoldering Friday morning.
