Extra-Alarm Fire Cuts Some Power To Lakeview High-Rise

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A two-alarm basement fire caused a Lakeview high-rise apartment building to lose power Thursday night.

Chicago Fire Department crews responded to reports of a fire at a high-rise building in the 3200 block of North Lake Shore Drive, Fire Media Affairs said shortly after 10:30 p.m.

The fire started in the basement and was mostly contained there, cutting power to areas near the blaze, according to a fire official at the scene. Elevators in the building are out of service, Fire Media Affairs said.

It was reported extinguished by 11:39 p.m., although smoke was still moving to higher floors via stairwells and elevator shafts, Fire Media Affairs said.

Only residents near the fire were evacuated, the fire official said. Two warming buses — one which appeared to hold about a dozen people — were outside the building.

The fire department is advising other residents to stay inside their apartments and keep doors closed. Residents who feel threatened should call 911 and firefighters will come to them, according to Fire Media Affairs.

No injuries were reported, but crews remained at the building to check on residents, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The American Red Cross was also at the scene.

The building is being ventilated to remove smoke, Fire Media Affairs said.
