Even On The North Side, Cardinals Fans Have A Playoff Haven

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cardinals fans – and maybe a few White Sox fans – eager to watch Friday's Cubs-Cardinals playoff game in a sea of red in Chicago have an option. An Old Town bar is getting ready for Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

Sedgwick's Bar & Grill is about 2.4 miles south of Wrigley Field, but its allegiance lies much farther south – in St. Louis.

Owner Mario Davila grew up in Michigan as a Detroit Tigers fan but became a Cardinals fan a few years ago, before he bought Sedgwick's this past spring. It was already a Cardinals bar when he bought it.

"I obviously became a huge fan after working just one game here during the playoffs," he said. "I mean, awesome fans, great food, it's an atmosphere that's unbelievable. So it's hard not to be a fan, especially when you own the place."

Sedgwick's previous owner was a Cardinals fan from Decatur who switched the bar after St. Louis won the 2006 World Series.

Davila said his staff has been working to make sure the bar is stocked with Cardinals fan favorites, including St. Louis style pizza.

"I can't say the name of the pizza, technically, because it's trademarked, but we get a St. Louis style pizza shipped in from St. Louis, which is pretty cool, and we're the only bar in Chicago that has it," he said.

For the uninitiated, St. Louis-style pizza has a very thin cracker-like crust made without yeast, and the cheese is a mix of provolone, Swiss and white cheddar.

Davila said Sedgwick's is always packed during Cardinals' playoff games, and he doesn't expect many Cubs fans to come in, but he'd welcome them with open arms.
