Evanston Township High School Lockdown Lifted After Two Guns Found

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- Evanston Township High School was locked down for most of the day on Thursday after police found two guns inside the school, but students have since been sent home.

Evanston police said there was no active shooter at the school, no shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.

CBS 2's Jackie Kostek followed up with the parents of the students who relied on their children's texts for updates. Despite that, parents felt helpless.

"My daughter is on the inside of the school, face down in a classroom, silent," said Ralph Edwards. "Being told to not say anything, is real scary. I want to risk it all, and go in and be that superhero to pull my babies out."

Police said it all began around 9:30 a.m. when an Evanston Police school resource officer was made aware of students potentially smoking Marijuana in a bathroom.

When that officer and members of the school safety team went to investigate, police say two students were immediately detained for smoking and during that investigation, they also found two handguns which triggered the seven-hour lockdown.

Around 1:30 p.m., police said the incident "has largely concluded" and students had been dismissed for the day.

"At this time it is reported that all individuals involved have been located and are currently being detained by police," Evanston police posted earlier in the day on Twitter.

Police say nine students in total were detained -- security footage connecting seven additional students who had previously been in the bathroom as well.

Police said there are no other incidents at other schools in Evanston. No word on any charges involving those two guns that were found.
