EPA To Start Lead Cleanup At East Chicago, Ind. Housing Complex

(CBS) – The news continues to be grim for residents of an East Chicago, Ind. public housing complex, which is contaminated with lead.

Hundreds of residents of the West Calumet site learned the dirt their children have been playing in has lead levels 10 times higher than the federal safety standard.

On Monday, the EPA will begin cleaning up contaminated soil, remediating the worst properties first.

EPA workers will first test the air and dust inside residents' homes.

Residents will be temporarily relocated if necessary.
