Englewood shooting leaves two people dead, three hurt

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Gunfire erupted Thursday evening as families enjoyed a warm evening outside in Englewood.

Two men were killed in the shooting, and three others were injured.

At 5:35 p.m., the attackers got out of a car in the 600 block of West 61st Place and began shooting at a group of people on the front lawn of a home.

"Obviously, with the nice weather, several individuals were on the block – gathering, enjoying the nice weather," said Deputy police Chief Matt Cline. "A vehicle pulled up. At least two individuals exited the vehicle and fired several rounds down the street."

Police said a 26-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were both pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center after being shot. The younger man was shot in the shoulder, the older man throughout his body.

Dispatch reports indicated that the older of the two men who died was shot 10 times.

A 17-year-old boy was reported in good condition after being shot in the arm. He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

A 21-year-old man was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition with a gunshot to the arm. A 26-year-old woman was also shot in the arm and was taken to Stroger in an unknown condition.

That woman's sister told CBS 2's Marissa Perlman she was grazed and was expected to recover. They were simply sitting in their car when they saw and heard the rapid gunfire.

Dozens of shell casings lined 61st Place after the shooting. Bullets passed straight through the front windshields of cars parked outside.

Toy scooters were pulled from the crime scene, where families with children were enjoying the beautiful May day.

On scene, family and friends learning of the tragedy consoled each other. Neighbors said they heard rapid gunfire go off – and ran for cover.

It was not clear late Thursday if the victims were the intended targets, or if they were caught in the crossfire.

Police said some of the victims are related, and also live on the block.
