8 People Shot, 4 Fatally, After Argument At Gathering In Englewood

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Eight people were shot, four fatally, during a gathering in Englewood Tuesday morning.

According to the Chicago police, shots were fired after an argument inside a residence in the 6200 block of South Morgan Street around 5:45 a.m.

Police Supt. David Brown confirmed four people, three women and one man, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people were injured in the shooting and are being treated at local hospitals. Police said a 25-year-old man was shot in the back of the head and was taken to Christ Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Another man is also being treated at Christ Hospital.

A 23-year-old man took himself to St. Bernard Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back. Police said the man was then taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

A woman is also in critical condition at University of Chicago Medical Center.

Police said there was a 2-year-old child inside the residence at the time of the shooting. The child was not physically injured.

Brown said a witness heard gunshots around 2 a.m. in the same area and a Shot Spotter alert was reported at the same time. The witness told police they heard more gunshots around 5:45 a.m.

Brown said he is waiting to confirm the events that took place after the 2 a.m. alert. He said there was no indication of loud music or a party taking place at the residence.

Several shell casings and a high capacity magazine for a gun were found inside the house, police confirmed. No guns were located at the scene.

The Supt. said it appears there was no forced entry.

At an unrelated news conference Tuesday morning, Mayor Lori Lightfoot blamed the shooting on the easy availability of illegal guns -- an argument she's made many times before when addressing gun violence in Chicago. The mayor said the city needs help from the federal government to reduce violent crime, but insisted the city is safe.

"The reality is our city is safe, and I stand by that. We have done yeoman's work over the course of a very difficult year, where every major city – New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and on and on and on the list goes – have seen a similar surge in violence, and it is distressing. But I remain very focused, very intentional, as does the Police Department, but also our entire team," she said.

The surviving victims of Tuesday's mass shooting have not been interviewed, as they are being treated, and no arrests have been made.

There will be an increased police presence in this area.

This is a developing story.
