Emanuel Says Progress On City Financial Matters Being Made In Springfield
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel says in Springfield, there's progress being made on financial matters important to Chicago right now, though most of it has been behind the scenes, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.
Much of the fiscal talk in the State Capitol has been occurring in working groups Governor Rauner has set up…and in closed-door meetings. Mayor Emanuel has lifted the veil of secrecy a bit, telling reporters here legislation involving Chicago is taking shape.
The mayor says there have been good discussions on proposals for a city-owned casino in Chicago and he says there has been talk about revenue. He wasn't specific, but reports suggest lawmakers are at least considering expanding the state's sales tax to include services.
Most of the talk about revenue in the General Assembly has involved the proposal to expand the state sales tax to include taxing services.
As for pensions, the mayor is hoping the administration's deals with some of the city's public employee unions will survive an ongoing court challenge.
