Emanuel Names Anna Valencia As City Clerk

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel has named Anna Valencia, a top aide, to be Chicago's next City Clerk.

"Anna has proven herself as the next generation of leadership. For parents of immigrants, in Chicago and around the country, Anna is proof the struggle and sacrifice is worth it," said Mayor Emanuel, in a statement. "She brings an energy, a focus, and a sense of passion for public service to the City Clerk's office, and I know she will serve the people of Chicago well."

Anna Valencia has been Mayor Emanuel's chief lobbyist. She has run campaigns for Congressmen Mike Quigley and Bill Foster, and Senator Dick Durbin. Now, she is the Mayor's Choice for City Clerk, replacing Susana Mendoza, who has just taken over a State Comptroller. WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports from City Hall.

12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas said he was behind Valencia from the beginning and thinks she will make a great clerk.

"Young, dynamite, very professional," Cardenas said. "Knows politics, loves politics. I think [she] would compliment the mayor very well. He's more of a hard edge, and she softens him. If he is running in 2019, its a phenomenal duo."

26th Ward Alderman Roberto Maldonado is applauding the choice, which needs City Council approval.

"Anna Valencia is a very, very competent professional," Ald. Maldonado said. "She knows politics. I know she will make a great City Clerk for the City of Chicago. I look forward to working with her."

This appointment is subject to the city council's approval, but she takes the job on an interim basis immediately.
