Emanuel, Garcia Continue To Squabble Over City Budget
(CBS) -- As they approach Tuesday's runoff election, Mayor Emanuel and challenger Chuy Garcia continue to clash over how much to say--or not say--about plans to confront the city's budget woes, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.
All through the campaign, Rahm Emanuel has hammered rival Chuy Garcia for not being specific about his budget and revenue proposals and especially for saying he would appoint a committee to help draft a budget after the election.
"A, the idea that he would subcontract the big decisions to an unelected, unaccountable board," Emanuel said.
But Commissioner Garcia says if you are buying a house you don't just say it looks good on the outside, you want to get inside and inspect the plumbing and look for termites.
"What I'm saying is that before we put forth any more revenue or tax proposals to sock Chicagoans, you need to be transparent about how you've spent those dollars," Garcia said.
The mayor chides Garcia for not naming everyone who would not be on his committee, but Garcia declined to name the labor leaders who would participate. He has disclosed a couple of other names.
