Elgin Bicyclist Killed By Freight Train After Falling On Tracks

(STMW)  – A bicyclist who fell on train tracks in northwest suburban Elgin died after being hit by a freight train early Saturday, the Courier-News is reporting.

Emergency crews responded to call of someone hit by a train at 12:35 a.m. near the National Street Metra station on Hendee Street, according to a statement from Elgin police.

The bicycist apparently had fallen while riding across the tracks and was hit by a freight train, police said.

The Kane County Coroner's office confirmed the death but the bicyclists name, age and gender were withheld Saturday afternoon pending notification of family members.

National Street was shut down for several hours early Saturday to traffic between State Street and Grove Avenue, as were the Highland Avenue and Chicago Street train crossings as officials investigated.
