Elderly Woman Hospitalized After Fire That Prompted Mayday From Firefighter

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A Chicago firefighter briefly found himself in trouble Wednesday morning at a fire in a South Loop mid-rise apartment building.

WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports the fire started around 7:45 a.m. on the third floor of an apartment building in the 1100 block of South Plymouth Court.

Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas said extra crews rushed to the scene when a firefighter called for help.

"We had one firefighter that ran low on his air, and wound up calling a mayday, because he eventually ran out of air," he said.

McNicholas said that firefighter was quickly located and brought out of the building. He was given oxygen, and did not need to go to the hospital.

An elderly woman who lives in the unit where the fire started was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and the cause was under investigation.
