Elderly Man, Dog Rescued From Pullman Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An elderly man and his pit bull were revived after they were rescued from a burning building in Pullman on Tuesday.
The fire started around 9 a.m. at a 2 ½-story building at 740 E. 105th Pl. Neighbors reported seeing heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the building.
Six people were able to escape safely, but an elderly man was trapped on the second floor. Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said firefighters were able to reach the man, who passed out, but revived him before taking him to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
A pit bull who recently gave birth also was found unconscious inside the home. The dog was revived using a special pet mask, which had been donated to the Fire Department a few years ago. Her six puppies escaped unharmed.
Langford said the pet masks -- designed in all shapes and sizes for cats and dogs -- are used more often than we think.
The man was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in serious to critical condition.
The fire was struck out by about 9:30 p.m.
The cause was under investigation.
