Elderly Man Killed In Near West Side High-Rise Fire

(CBS) -- A man is dead after a high-rise fire on the Near West Side. The flames broke out just before 11 p.m. Saturday on South Damen Avenue.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports neighbors describe the building as a senior community.

Fire fighters got the call for help around 11:20 p.m. at West Point Plaza, a high rise just off of Van Buren and Damen.

The blaze began in a unit on the 11th floor where first responders discovered a 70-year-old man.

Firefighters say the man was on oxygen for a health issue and that may have played a role in the blaze.

He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The fire was contained to that one unit.

No one else was injured. There is no word on a cause at this time.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the building is not equipped with sprinklers, but does have smoke detection and extinguishers
