Elderly Man Fatally Struck By Vehicle On SW Side

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An 84-year-old man died early Saturday after he was struck by a Jeep last week in the South Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

David Vega, of the 2800 block of South Lawndale Avenue, was crossing the street on Jan. 28 about 11:25 a.m. in the 3600 block of West 26th Street when he was struck by a 2003 Jeep Liberty, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The driver of the Jeep, a west suburban Naperville man, was attempting to make a left turn eastbound onto 26th Street from the southbound lane of South Lawndale Avenue, police said.

Vega was originally taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, but was transferred to Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital on Friday, where he was pronounced dead at 1:50 a.m. Saturday, according to the medical examiner's office.

An autopsy conducted Sunday found Vega died of multiple injuries he suffered when he was struck by the vehicle, the medical examiner's office said.

The driver of the Jeep was cited for failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian in the roadway, police said.
