Eisenhower Expressway shooting; 1 dead, 1 wounded

Shooting on Eisenhower Expressway leaves one dead, one hurt

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting late Tuesday morning on the Eisenhower Expressway.

As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported, the police investigation after the shooting caused a traffic mess – with the road blocked off for hours.

Illinois State Police said shortly after 11:45 a.m., troopers responded to reports of a shooting in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 290 near Cicero Avenue.

Bullet holes were left in a silver Lincoln sport-utility vehicle – which was surrounded by police and first responders. There were three bullet markers on the road.

According to Illinois State Police, a man was rushed from the scene - but died at the hospital.

A woman refused treatment at the scene on the Eisenhower, instead getting herself to the hospital with injuries.

This was the 41st shooting on Cook County expressways this year. That figure is down from 64 in the same timeframe last year.

We saw the most expressway shootings in 2021, when there were 273. They have trended downward since.

But that is not much comfort to those who live nearby or those who take the expressway.

"It's very scary," said AJ Johnson.

Johnson grew up on a block right next to the Ike.

"I drive the Eisenhower all the time," he said, "so I'm actually kind of fearful myself that I would drive and there's a drive-by shooting."

Johnson's mom still lives in the same place where he grew up.

"It's very tragic to hear there was a fatal shooting right in front of her house," he said.

Johnson said one expressway shooting is too many.

"I'm very, very hesitant to drive on the Eisenhower," he said.

One killed, one wounded in Eisenhower Expressway shooting

Eastbound traffic was diverted at Harlem Avenue while police investigated, but all eastbound lanes reopened by about 2:10 p.m.

The Illinois State Police investigation continued late Tuesday.

Anyone who witnessed the expressway shooting is asked to call Illinois State Police at (847) 294-4400, or email at ISP.CrimeTips@Illinois.gov. Witnesses may remain anonymous.
