Ed Debevic's Dig Fails To Find 1989 Time Capsule

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Owners of the temporarily closed Ed Debevic's promised an even more worthwhile unveiling than the dud opening of Al Capone's vault in 1986, but their own dig on Tuesday turned out to be a bust.

Owners of Ed Debevic's tried to dig up a time capsule buried by magicians and entertainers Penn & Teller at 640 N. Wells St. in 1989, but all they found was "a hunk of urinal, an empty can of Schlitz, a tea pot, and a woman's shoe," according to a spokeswoman for the diner.

The spokeswoman said servers who were on hand for the time capsule burial in 1989 confirmed crews were digging in the right place Tuesday, but no time capsule was found where they dug.

"It was fun to try our hand at archaeology, but we'll stick with the restaurant biz," the diner said in a statement.

The '50s-style River North diner closed in October, but owners have said it will reopen in a new location in the spring. Management has not said where yet, other than east of the old one.

The old diner has been torn down to make way for a new 22-story apartment building.
