Durbin, Oberweis Square Off In Only Televised Debate

(CBS) -- Senator Dick Durbin and Republican challenger Jim Oberweis squared off in their only televised debate Wednesday night on WLS Channel 7. WBBM's Bob Roberts says there was one recurring theme.

For nearly five minutes early in the debate the spotlight was on the Florida home owned by Oberweis and his wife.

"I just don't understand it," Durbin said. "In the year 2010, my opponent decided to give up his permanent residency in the state of Illinois for tax purposes."

Oberweis said he has lived in the same home in Sugar Grove for decades.

"If my wife has a home in another state or anywhere and claims that for a homestead exemption. I am no longer allowed to have a homestead exemption on my home," Oberweis said.

Durbin brought it up five minutes later and again just before closing statements when he said Illinois is the only home legal residence he has ever had.
