Durbin, Emanuel Break Ground On Navy Pier Flyover Project

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel along with Senator Dick Durban broke ground for the Navy Pier Flyover Project.

The $60 million lakefront trail project has been in the works for a while and now construction will finally begin.

"It is a sight to behold. For a lot of folks for modest means, this lakefront is their Disneyland, it is their vacation. It really is something they look forward to every weekend, every chance they get," said Senator Dick Durbin.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the Navy Pier Flyover is an elevated path for safer walking and biking along the lakefront trail. The 18.5 mile trail will extend from the Chicago Bridge to the Jane Addams Park.

Construction on the Navy Pier Fly Over begins Monday, March 24, 2014. The entire project is expected to be finished by 2018.

On Monday, March 24, 2014 The Right Lane and Shoulder of Lake Shore Drive will be closed temporarily between Illinois Street and Grand Avenue.
