Durbin Addresses Local Ukrainian Community

CHICAGO (CBS) -- As Russian troops surround a Ukrainian military base in Crimea today, world leaders along with Senator Dick Durbin are urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his military. Durbin addressed the Ukrainian community in Chicago Sunday.

More than 200 people from the Ukrainian community packed the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Chicago to hear from Senator Dick Durbin about the crisis in their country.

"No one has suggested, I have not suggested, military action by the United States. One of the people today suggested we might move our fleet closer, but there has been no suggestion from the administration of boots on the ground or military forces," said Durbin.

Durbin mentioned sanctions but says it would take years for sanctions to work. However he did say he would like to see NATO get involved.
