DuPage Prosecutors: Lombard Woman Murders Husband

(STMW) -- A woman was charged Friday night for murdering her husband in west suburban Lombard.

Anka Misocevic, whose age was not immediately known, has been charged with one count of first degree murder, a statement from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office said.

Officers responded to the home in the 800 block of Hammerschmidt Avenue in Lombard and took Misocevic's husband, Zeljko, to an area hospital, where he later died. His age was also not immediately available, Lombard police and the DuPage County Coroner's office said.

Misocevic will appear in bond court Saturday at 8 a.m. in the DuPage County Sheriff's office in Wheaton, the state's attorney's office said. No other details about her arrest were being provided Friday night.

Meanwhile, some students were escorted home from a nearby school Friday afternoon, school officials said.

Staff members at Hammerschmidt Elementary School at 617 Hammerschmidt Ave. escorted certain children home for the second day in a row, Lombard Elementary District 44 Supt. Jim Blanche said.

Lombard police alerted school officials about 11 a.m. Thursday that an "incident" had occurred two blocks from the school.

The street was closed to traffic Friday afternoon as officers investigated, according to Blanche.

He said a student from Glenn Westlake Middle School lives in the home where the incident occurred, and was contacted by police and "brought to a place of safety." He could not confirm whether a murder had been committed.

School officials at Hammerschmidt sent out an alert to parents, letting them know there was a heavy police presence nearby.

"Some of us went over to make sure no kids walked by," Blanche said. "We escorted a few kids who lived on the block home."

The street near the elementary school was still closed Friday, he said, and school staff would likely escort students home for a second day.

Blanche said he was assured by police there was no longer a danger to the community.

Ronald Kowalik, 82, who lives across the street from the house where police are investigating, said officers shut down the block about noon Thursday.

He said police went door-to-door telling residents there had been an "incident" at the house, and that one person was in custody and another hospitalized.

"All I know is they were taking a lot of photos inside and outside the house," Kowalik said Friday morning.

Police said the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force, DuPage County State's Attorney's office and DuPage County Coroner's office were assisting in the death investigation.
