Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez Chose Not To Stay In Trump Hotel In Chicago Earlier This Season
(CBS) Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez confirmed over the weekend that he refused to stay at the Trump International Hotel and Tower during his team's road trip to Chicago earlier this season.
As the Dodgers and Cubs continue to square off in the National League Championship Series that's now tied 1-1, Gonzalez told the OC Register that during the team's trip to Chicago for four games from May 30-June 2, he stayed at another hotel based on principle.
"I didn't stay there," Gonzalez told the OC Register without going into details. "I had my reasons."
Gonzalez was born in San Diego but grew up in Mexico and has represented the country in international baseball competitions. The Trump International Hotel and Tower is owned by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has made numerous inflammatory comments about Latinos and threatened to "build a wall" on the U.S.-Mexico border to keep illegal immigrants out.
While they've often stayed at the Trump Hotel during trips to Chicago, the Dodgers didn't stay there over the weekend as they split a pair of games with the Cubs, the OC Register reported. It didn't have anything to do with politics but rather hotel policy requiring a down payment that was non-refundable, the OC Register reported.
Gonzalez's solo homer Sunday night was the lone run in a 1-0 win for the Dodgers. Game 3 of the NLCS is set for Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
