Doctors Offer Free Skin Cancer Screenings At North Avenue Beach

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Hundreds of runners, walkers, joggers and beach-goers got to take advantage of free skin cancer screening at one of Chicago's busiest beaches.

WBBM's Kimberly Easton reports more than 50 Chicago-area dermatologists pitched a massive tent on North Avenue Beach and screened more than 400 people for skin cancer.

Dr. Rebecca Tung with Loyola University Health System says when dealing with skin cancer early detection is critical.

"Skin cancer is epidemic; 5 million cases per year, we don't want you to be a death from melanoma. It is preventable," said Tung.

The annual event raises awareness about skin cancer and provides education on sun safety practices. It is put on by members of the Chicago Dermatological Society and the Women's Dermatologic Society, in partnership with doctors at Loyola University Health System and the Chicago Park District.
