Divvy Rider In Critical Condition After Hit And Run In River North

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was critically injured when a hit-and-run driver struck him while he was riding a Divvy bike early Tuesday morning in the River North neighborhood.

Surveillance video from a nearby condo building does not show the crash itself, but does show a car right behind the victim as he was riding a Divvy bike on Grand Avenue near Kingsbury Street.

Police said, around 1:15 a.m., the 32-year-old man was riding west on Grand Avenue, when a dark-colored sedan – possibly a Honda or Toyota – struck him from behind.

A woman riding with the man told police the car fled the scene after the crash.

Sources said the man's wife was riding with him at the time.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The woman was not injured.

A man who lives in the nearby condo building said, during the day, the area where the man was hit is congested.

"There's a lot of accidents there. You could even see how the concrete's been torn up and built up. That's because cars have gotten into accidents and hit that bridge," he said, referring to the Grand Avenue bridge over the Chicago River.

No one was in custody Tuesday morning. The Police Major Accidents Investigation Unit was investigating.
