Device Scans For Possible Drugs In Cocktails

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A device currently in development could someday soon determine whether somebody has tampered with your cocktail.

The pd.id (personal drink ID) works like this: Dip the device into your drink and it will collect a small sample and conduct tests for light, current and temperature.

It uses a database to determine if your glass of white wine is consistent with the properties of white wine or if there is something in the drink that may be cause for concern. If there is a problem a red light blinks.

The device sometimes can identify the drug used in the drink. However, the developers say, the pd.id will at least flag a drink as suspicious.

pd.id runs on a battery and can fit easily in a purse or your pocket. It is also reusable and can be cleaned with soap and water.

If the current fund-raising plan is successful, the pd.id will be ready for deliveries in the spring of 2015.

"It's about personal protection, feeling secure and it's about empowering our daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, spouses, partners, friends, coworkers and ourselves to be safe in an often unsafe world," the creators say on their website.

"In North America, 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. 25 percent of those assaults are facilitated by alcohol or compounds known as Date Rape Drugs."
