Detroit's Victor Martinez Needs Left Knee Surgery

DETROIT (AP) -- Tigers slugger Victor Martinez needs surgery on his left knee after injuring it during his offseason workout program for the second time in four years.

The team said Thursday that Martinez tore the medial meniscus in his knee and is scheduled for surgery Tuesday with Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida. The Tigers say an additional update will be provided then.

Detroit has not announced a timetable for Martinez's return. The star designated hitter missed the entire 2012 season after injuring that same knee.

Martinez hit .335 with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2014, and the Tigers signed him to a $68 million, four-year deal after the season.
