Desecrated Remains Re-Buried At Burr Oak Cemetery

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Finally, resting in peace.

A total of 2,000 human remains and grave items received a burial ceremony at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip--after it was discovered the burial grounds were desecrated seven years ago.

Families and friends of loved ones buried there paid their final respects for a second time.

The ceremony marked a symbolic end to the criminal investigation.

Four defendants were convicted and sentenced for digging up graves, dumping human remains and reselling plots at the cemetery.

The desecration happened between 2003 and 2009.
