Des Plaines shooting: 16-year-old killed

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in northwest suburban Des Plaines are investigating the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy Sunday night.

Police said shots were fired around 9:30 p.m. near Miner and Perry streets. When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old Justyce Broadway-Williams lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds.

The Des Plaines Fire Department tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors were shaken up over the shooting outside their homes. Jeremy Daniels said he was watching TV when he heard the shots.

"I wasn't sure, and then there were multiple shots after that, and then that's then I realized it wasn't a TV show," Daniels said.

Daniels said he saw the teen on the ground and called 911. The shooting happened about a quarter mile away from the Des Plaines police station.

Neighbors on the quiet residential street in Des Plaines are still perplexed as to why gunshots were fired on their block. Dean Stoyanov said he had just finished up his evening walk with his corgi, Bentley, at the time of the shooting.

"We heard some sounds coming from the windows; wasn't sure if it was fireworks or gunshots, but then soon after we hear the police racing down the street," he said.

As of Monday afternoon, investigators said the shooting "appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the general public."

Police wouldn't say anything about possible suspects or motive, telling us it's still under investigation.

The uncertainty is upsetting for many neighbors, who would like more information now.

Stoyanov said this is the first time in his two years in the neighborhood he's heard gunshots.

"It's kind of like throwing a curveball at us," he said.
