Derrick Rose Shrine Rebuilt Underneath Metra Underpass
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The shrine to Derrick Rose beneath a Bucktown Metra underpass has been spruced up and reassembled after someone trashed it.
The artists, who call themselves "Bae Cutler" and "Joaking Noah," put it back together with the help of a dozen other fans beneath the Fullerton Metra Union Pacific underpass. Rose is currently sidelined after late February knee surgery, his third such operation in the past three years.
There are votive candles, photos, bobble-head dolls and flowers, framed by a pair of crutches decorated in roses. "Cutler" said it is far more elaborate than the original shrine they erected Sunday. Above on the underpass wall remains a sketch of the Bulls guard wearing a crown of thorns, atop the phrase "Pray 4 Rose."
No one mentioned that it's located a mere 200 feet from the Kennedy Expressway wall where hundreds once said that they saw an image of the Virgin Mary.
"Cutler" said he wants to bring Bulls fans together and said most fans he's met say they like the shrine.
Miguel Dominguez was among the fans who showed up to help reassemble it. He said he can understand how some might find it in questionable taste but said he believes the vandals are the ones who were disrespectful.
"Cutler," Dominguez and others said they remain hopeful that Rose can recover from surgery to remove a torn miniscus and be ready for the NBA playoffs.
