DePaul Warns Female Students After Phone Numbers Posted Online

CHICAGO (CBS) -- DePaul University has issued a public safety alert on its Lincoln Park campus, after someone posted several female students' phone numbers online without their permission.

WBBM Newsradio's Terry Keshner reports the university said there have been several incidents of men approaching female students, and pressuring them for their phone numbers, which were then posted on a private website.

"Earlier this month, we learned of an incident involving a stranger approaching a female student, asking for her phone number, flirting with her, and also hugging her," spokeswoman Carol Hughes said.

That incident was on Sept. 8. Last week, DePaul campus safety officials learned of several other similar incidents.

"Students did come forward, at our request, to report the incidents to our Public Safety Office," spokeswoman Carol Hughes said. "These phone numbers, which he and apparently a few other men were obtaining from our students, were then posted on a private members-only website."

Campus security and Chicago police officers questioned one man in connection with the incidents. He was not charged with a crime, but was given a no trespassing order for the campus.

"Our Public Safety Office had not been aware of some of the behavior in the past, and are labeling it odd behavior, and we really want to make sure that the campus community is aware of this," Hughes said.
