Cook County Sheriff's Office Warns Officers To Watch For Parolees Tampering With Electronic Monitoring

(CBS) -- The Cook County Sheriff's office is warning its officers to watch out for state parolees who have tampered with their electronic monitoring.

The heading says: "Officer Safety Alert" - and it's from the Cook County Sheriff's Office to all patrol and street units - warning about state parolees on electronic monitoring who have tampered with the device and are driving around undetected.

Tom Shaer, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Corrections, says state parolees interfering with their electronic monitoring is "not a major problem" and he says there's been no recent uptick in incidents.

"We are not encountering a significant issue here."

But Shaer says the state has told the Cook County Sheriff's office to watch out for any state parolees driving with a monitoring box plugged into their car - a device that should be at home.
