Democratic Lawmaker Says Next Moves In Budget Standoff In Gov. Rauner's Hands
(CBS) -- Democratic lawmakers are making good on their promise to send Governor Bruce Rauner budget bills that he's already labeled "unacceptable."
A key lawmaker says many of the next moves are in the governor's hands, reports WBBM's Political Editor Craig Dellimore.
Chicago State Senator Heather Steans, one of the top budget negotiators, says lawmakers have been sending the governor budget bills since late last week, and he should have all of them by Wednesday.
The governor's office says the budget passed first by House Speaker Michael Madigan is unbalanced and unacceptable.
Senator Steans suggests the objections aren't really about the budget bills. She says the governor's insists on non-budgetary items he wants.
Those non-budgetary items are things the governor describes as reforms that protect the middle class, free up resources for the most vulnerable, and grow jobs throughout the state. But term limits and restrictions on unions are among them.
Steans says there are talks aimed at giving the governor some of what he wants, like workers compensation reform.
