Delta Resuming Some Flights After Major Computer Outage

Updated 08/08/16 - 10:50 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Delta Air Lines has resumed a limited number of flights Monday morning, after a major computer outage brought its operations to a stop.

Delta said the outage began around 1:30 a.m. Central time. Flights that already were in the air at the time were not affected, but all departing flights were grounded for several hours.

The Atlanta-based airline said a power failure at its Atlanta hub caused the computer outage, affecting its operations system-wide. The outage even caused flight boards at airports to incorrectly indicate flights were on time.

Around 7:40 a.m. Central time, Delta said a limited number of departures were resuming, but cancellations and delays would continue.

Delta had canceled approximately 300 flights as of 9:30 a.m. Central time. The airline operates a total of about 6,000 flights per day.

"While systems are improving and flights are resuming, delays and cancellations continue," the airline said.

Delta operates flights at both O'Hare and Midway airports.

Travelers at Midway International Airport were unable to check in for flights at computer kiosks early Monday, and had to wait in line to be checked in manually.

Ava Kraemer was hoping to make it to Florida for some important business meetings, but as of 6 a.m., still was unsure when her flight would leave.

"I'm in charge of going to Florida to pick up people for a sales meeting, and I am in charge of people, so they're just going to be sitting at the airport waiting for me until I don't know when. Are they going to put us on other flights, or we're just going to sit here in the airport?" she said.

Rob Fisher was hoping to reach Costa Rica on Monday, but will have to try again Tuesday at Midway.

Many other flyers unable to delay their plans were forced to turn to other airlines to find seats.

Delta was waiving change fees for all flights on Monday through Friday, so affected passengers could find another flight.
