Deb Mell Announces Her Divorce On Twitter

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Ald. Deb Mell announced on Twitter that she is getting a divorce.

"Dear Friends, It is with great sadness I tell you my marriage with Christin has ended," she said on Thursday. "As you know divorce is painful, therefore we ask for privacy as we go through this process. Thank you for your continued support and understanding. Deb"

Mell married her partner Christin Baker in Iowa in 2011.

Mell became the first high-profile elected official in Illinois to publicly enter into a same-sex marriage.

Mell is the daughter of former long-time Alderman Richard Mell.

Her sister, former Illinois First Lady Patti, is married to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
