DCFS Investigating Death Of 8-Month-Old Boy In Gresham

CHICAGO (CBS) -- State child welfare authorities are investigating the death of an 8-month-old boy Thursday night in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

Officers were called about 10:27 p.m. to a home in the 8900 block of South Emerald, and when they arrived, they discovered the boy was not breathing, according to Chicago Police.

The boy, who lived at the home, was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where he was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m., police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the boy's mother for allegations of abuse and neglect, a department spokeswoman said. That investigation is pending.

The department has not had prior contact with the family and there were no other children living in the home, DCFS said.

Area South detectives are conducting a death investigation, according to police.
