David Ross To Get A Retirement Tour From Cubs Teammates

(CBS) It may not carry quite the magnitude of the shows for Derek Jeter and Kobe Bryant, but Cubs teammates are planning on providing a farewell tour for veteran catcher David Ross, who plans to retire at the end of 2016.

"He's very underrated," third baseman Kris Bryant said. "You see all the retirement tours for Derek Jeter and David Ortiz, which is very deserving, and we think Rossy deserves it too. But we're going to do it in our own little way and have fun with it, because Rossy is probably the best teammate I've ever had. I'm definitely going to miss him. I want him to stay, but hopefully he comes back as a manager someday and I get to play for him.

"This last year, we're going to make it really good for him."

Cubs players haven't revealed exactly what they plan to do for the 38-year-old Ross, but the first step was making a "Grandpa Rossy" Instagram account recently that gives a behind-the-scenes peek at the end of Ross' MLB journey and that shows him -- for lack of a better term -- being old.

"He was all for it," Bryant said of Ross' reaction to the Instagram account. "He just laughs and thinks us young guys are just stupid. He doesn't understand (Instagram). I think one time last year, we were on a bus ride going to a hotel, and he called me to the back of the bus and he's like, 'Kris, I need a good hashtag for my tweet.' That's when you know he's a little older. I don't know if he understands Instagram, but we're having fun with it. We're trying to catch him in those moments when he's not expecting it. It'd be fun for the fans to see because he's a trip."

Ross served as the Cubs' backup catcher in 2015, primarily catching good friend Jon Lester. He was lauded from top to bottom in the organization for his leadership. He hit .176 with one homer and nine RBIs.
