Cyclist Hit, Injured in Chicago Ridge

(CBS) -- Police in south suburban Chicago Ridge are questioning the driver accused of hitting and critically injuring a bicyclist.

CBS2's Charlie De Mar reports Chicago Ridge police are being tight-lipped on the investigation. Police and detectives were out at the intersection of 111th and Mayfield Streets for hours late Saturday night.

The incident happened after 11 p.m., and the cyclist was taken to nearby Advocate Christ Medical Center. A witness who was closing up at a nearby pizza shop said the man on the bike landed several feet from his bike and didn't appear to be moving or talking.

"The bike was completely destroyed. The guy was laying on the ground and then, all of a suden,  ambulances and everything put him on a stretcher, neck brace, he wasn't moving. They put him in an ambulance and took him away," said Matthew Ceska.

It is unclear what lead to the crash, but the windshield of the car involved gives some insight into the impact. The white car severely damaged the bicycle, which laid twisted and mangled onto the pavement.

Neighborhood residents say they're surprised more accidents haven't happened on the busy stretch of road.
