Cubs Sign RHP Trevor Cahill To 1-Year Deal

(CBS) The Cubs have officially announced the signing of right-hander Trevor Cahill to a one-year deal, a week after news surfaced at the Winter Meetings that the sides had agreed on a $4.25 million salary for 2016.

After signing a minor league deal with Chicago last season, the 27-year-old Cahill become a trusted arm for manager Joe Maddon late in the season. Cahill, 27, had a 2.12 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in 17 regular-season innings in 2015. He allowed one run in 2 2/3 postseason innings.

Cahill has a career 4.13 ERA. He began his career as a starter before transitioning into a reliever in recent years. He could be stretched out in spring training, though it's unlikely he makes a return to the rotation. Cahill will most likely be used as a long reliever and middle reliever.

Chicago's 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.
