Cubs Sign 4 Pitchers They Took Early In Draft

(CBS) The Cubs have signed right-hander Jake Stinnett, their second-round pick in this month's draft, and three other players they selected in the top seven rounds, they announced Thursday afternoon.

Chicago also agreed to terms with left-hander Carson Sands, their fourth-round pick out of North Florida Christian High; left-hander Justin Steele, their fifth-round pick out of George County High (Miss.); and right-hander James Northwood, their seventh-rounder out of St. Louis University.

The 22-year-old Stinnett went 8-6 with a 2.67 ERA as a senior at Maryland last season.

At the high school level, Sands, 19, was 11-1 with a 0.58 ERA, and Steele, 18, was 5-1 with a 0.98 ERA.

The 20-year-old Norwood went 8-2 with a 2.68 ERA at St. Louis.

The Cubs have now signed 11 of their 40 selections, including first-rounder Kyle Schwarber. They haven't signed third-round Mark Zagunis, a catcher out of Virginia Tech.
