Cubs Release LHP Rex Brothers

(CBS) The Rex Brothers era didn't last long in Chicago.

The Cubs released lefty reliever Brothers on Thursday, about three months after they signed him for $1.42 million in 2015. He had allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings in spring training, and Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters the team wanted to be fair to Brothers and part ways with him early because the Cubs didn't see him fitting into their plans.

The Cubs paid a $232,000 termination fee, the Tribune reported.
