Cubs Prospects Eddy Martinez, Jose Paulino Earn Minor League Monthly Honors
(CBS) The Cubs on Monday named Class-A outfielder Eddy Martinez the organization's minor league player of the month and Class-A left-hander Jose Paulino their pitcher of the month for July.
The 21-year-old Martinez hit .362 with three homers, 17 runs, 22 RBIs and a 1.010 OPS in 27 games with Class-A South Bend in July. He was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent last October and is hitting .266 with nine homers and 62 RBIs in 105 games this season.
The 21-year-old Paulino went 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA in five starts in July in time split between Class-A Eugene and South Bend. He had a 31-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Paulino is 5-0 with a 0.96 ERA in 47 innings across eight starts this season. The Cubs signed him in July 2011 out of the Dominican Republic.
