Cubs Place Rafael Soriano On 15-Day DL, Sign Clayton Richard Again

(CBS) The Cubs have placed right-handed reliever Rafael Soriano on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, they announced Wednesday.

Soriano, 35, has struggled in his short time with Chicago this season, posting a 6.35 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 5 2/3 innings this season. He debuted for the Cubs on July 20 after signing a minor league deal with the team earlier in the season and working his arm into better shape. Manager Joe Maddon indicated he'd like to use Soriano in high-leverage situations, but his struggles make that difficult to do now.

The Cubs also acquired right-handed reliever Tommy Hunter from the Orioles in a deadline-day deal last Friday.

In a corresponding move Wednesday, the Cubs have signed left-hander Clayton Richard after they'd designated him for assignment and he became a free agent earlier this week. He's been placed on the 25-man roster and will be available for the evening's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

Richard, 31, is 2-0 with a 4.29 ERA in 21 innings for the Cubs this season.
