Cubs, Pirates Clear Benches After Jake Arrieta Hit By Pitch

By Chris Emma--

PITTSBURGH (CBS) -- Benches cleared during the top of the seventh inning after Cubs ace Jake Arrieta was hit by a pitch from Pirates reliever Tony Watson in Wednesday's NL wild-card game.

Arrieta had hit two Pirates prior to the seventh inning. When he took the plate for his third at-bat of the game, Watson hit him near the mid-section. Arrieta began to walk toward the mound, and the benches emptied.

Players pushed and shoved. The only ejection was the Pirates' Sean Rodriguez, who was agressive in the middle of the scrum. He appeared to throw a punch that didn't land on anyone.

He later took swings at a Gatorade cooler in frustration.

The Cubs went on to win the game 4-0 and advance to face the Cardinals in the NLDS.
