Cubs Officially Release Jose Veras
(CBS) The Cubs have officially released Jose Veras, according to multiple reports, a move that comes as no surprise after the team designated him for assignment last week.
The move brings to an end a short and disastrous tenure for Veras in Chicago. He was tabbed as the Opening Day closer despite a shaky spring, and he blew two of his first four save chances. Veras was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in 12 appearances for the Cubs this season, for which he signed a $3.85 million contract for one year. The Cubs will also owe him a $150,000 buyout for 2015, the Chicago Tribune previously reported.
The Cubs could've traded Veras after designating him for assignment, but they found no takers on the market.
