Cubs' Kris Bryant Makes History With Monster Game Against Reds

(CBS) Cubs second-year slugger Kris Bryant entered uncharted territory Monday evening.

In Chicago's 11-8 win at Cincinnati, Bryant became the first player in the modern era (post-1900) to hit three home runs and also have two doubles in the game. In all, he finished with 16 total bases, a new Cubs record and three shy of the MLB record, according to the Reds PR staff. That mark was set by Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green back in 2002 when he homered four times in a game.

Bryant went 5-for-5, with four runs and six RBIs in addition to those five extra-base hits.

"I don't think I've ever had five hits in a game, let alone with three home runs," Bryant said in a postgame interview on WGN-TV.

Bryant became the youngest Cub to hit three homers in a game, according to the WGN broadcast. As for the three-homer/two-double history, Bryant was humbled.

"That's awesome," Bryant told the TV broadcast. "I'll cherish this game for a long time."

Bryant's hits were loud ones too. He had an RBI double in the first inning, a three solo homer in the third, a three-run homer in the fourth, a double in the sixth and a solo homer in the eighth.

Bryant's homer in the fourth went to the second deck.
