Cubs Invite Matt Murton, 2 Others To Spring Training

(CBS) The Cubs have extended non-roster major league spring training invites to outfielder Matt Murton and two others just days before their first workout.

Murton, 34, played for the Cubs from 2005-'08 but hasn't been in the majors since 2009. He's spent the past six seasons playing in Japan. He's a career .286 hitter with 29 homers in 346 career games in MLB.

The Cubs also invited right-hander Ryan Williams and left-hander Edgar Olmos to spring training. Williams was Chicago's 10th-round pick in the 2014 draft, while the 25-year-old Olmos is predominantly a career minor leaguer who also recorded a 4.50 ERA in 14 innings for the Mariners in 2015.

The Cubs have now invited 21 non-roster players to spring training. Here's the rest of the list, headlined by outfielder Albert Almora and right-hander Duane Underwood.
