Cubs Hire Darnell McDonald As Baseball Operations Assistant

(CBS) The Cubs have hired former player Darnell McDonald as a baseball operations assistant, the team announced Tuesday.

The 35-year-old McDonald retired in early April after a 16-year professional career as an outfielder, including last season in the Cubs organization, where he batted .302 in 53 at-bats at the big league level. For his career, McDonald was a .250 hitter.

In his new role, the team said, "McDonald will contribute to all elements within the club's player development and amateur scouting departments. He will visit the club's affiliates to work with the minor league players on and off the field, evaluate amateur players leading up to the draft and spend time around the major league club."
