Cubs' Russell, Rizzo, Heyward, Arrieta Named Gold Glove Finalists

(CBS) Four Cubs have been named finalists for the Gold Glove award.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo, shortstop Addison Russell, right fielder Jason Heyward and pitcher Jake Arrieta have all been named finalists at their respective positions, Rawlings announced Thursday.

Heyward is a three-time Gold Glove winner -- in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Rizzo, Russell and Arrieta have never won a Gold Glove before.

The other National League finalists in right field were Nick Markakis of the Braves and Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies. The two finalists joining Russell at shortstop were Freddy Galvis of the Phillies and Brandon Crawford of the Giants.

The two first basemen joining Rizzo as finalists were Wil Myers of the Padres and Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks. Arrieta's competition will be Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals and Zack Greinke of the Diamondbacks.

By advanced metrics, the Cubs had one of the greatest defenses in MLB history this season, turning batted balls into outs at a historic rate, when adjusted for park factor and the era.

The Gold Glove winners will be announced on Nov. 8.
