Cubs Add Pitcher Edgar Olmos, Release Shortstop Brendan Ryan

(CBS) The Cubs career of shortstop Brendan Ryan is over before it even started. The team claimed left-handed pitcher Edgar Olmos off waivers from the Orioles on Wednesday and released Ryan.

Olmos, 25, was claimed by the Cubs on Dec. 4 from the Mariners,, then picked up by the Orioles days later. He went 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in six appearances with Seattle last season. He also made five appearances with the Marlins in 2013.

Ryan was acquired by the Cubs in the deal that sent infielder Starlin Castro to the Yankees. The team also acquired pitcher Adam Warren from New York.

Also on Wednesday, Cubs right-hander Yoervis Medina was claimed off waivers by the Pirates. He had a 4.71 ERA in 17 appearances last season in time split between the Mariners and Cubs.

Chicago's 40-man roster is currently full.
