Cubs Acquire Reliever Tommy Hunter From Orioles
(CBS) In their second low-profile move of the day, the Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Tommy Hunter from the Orioles just minutes before Friday afternoon's non-waiver trade deadline in exchange for Triple-A outfielder Junior Lake.
Hunter, 29, is 2-2 with a 3.63 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 39 appearances this season. He has a strikeout rate of 6.4 per nine innings and a walk rate of 2.2 per nine innings. Hunter figures to be a middle reliever for the Cubs.
Hunter will be a free agent this offseason. He has a career 4.28 ERA since debuting with Texas in 2008. His average fastball velocity is around 96 mph, according to FanGraphs.
Lake, 25, got a long look from the Cubs in 2014 but didn't produce, batting .211 with nine homers, 25 RBIs and a .597 OPS in 108 games. He batted .224 with a .619 OPS in 21 games with the Cubs this season, which he's mostly spent at Triple-A Iowa.
Earlier Friday, Chicago traded for Miami right-hander Dan Haren, who will likely be the team's No. 5 starter.
In a corresponding move after Friday's trade, the Cubs designated 26-year-old right-hander Ben Rowen for assignment. He didn't appear in a game for the Cubs after compiling a 0.00 ERA in 9 1/3 innings at Iowa.
